Ahead of of Fashion: The basics of Style

Have you ever seen someone trying clothes that are very fashionable and very nice, but the person is just not pulling them off? They're proof that even great clothing does not equal great style. And that lack of a few simple basics will impair any look. How can you avoid this problem? It’s Simple. Chase a few basic guidelines.

Good grooming

This has got to be the number one way to make or crack a look. Prada was not meant for pit stains. No one looks good with straggly, greasy hair, chewed up fingernails, gross skin, unplucked eyebrows, and leg stubble. Take care of your skin. Take care of your hair. Take care of your cleanliness. Take care of your nails. In other words, take care of yourself.

Nice clothes

I'm not talking about luxurious clothes. Style is priceless, but doesn't have to be overpriced. I'm talking about taking care of your clothes, as you should yourself. PEOPLE - USE AN IRON. An iron is your friend. More notably, it is your clothing's friend. Love your iron. It loves you too!
Also, don't forget lint rollers, shoe polish, safety pins, and a good, strong stain remover.

Moderation

Please, do not do accessory overkill. I saw a girl the other day wearing giant hoope earrings, a beaded fringe necklace, a lariat, bangle bracelets, and those gross little butterfly hair clips. ALL IN ONE OUTFIT. Words cannot describe how wrong this is, so I'll let you use your imagination.

Find What Works

Like Cher in Clueless, I don't believe mirrors. Pictures are much better indicators of how you look. So find a really good picture of yourself, one you really like. Why do you like it? Think of what is satisfying you, whether it's the color red, a great hairstyle, good lighting, or falling in love. And make the most of it with every outfit.

How to become a successful fashion photographer..?

Do you want to be a fashion photographer? Fashion photography is an exceptionally tough market to break into, but if you are ready to work hard, have a good imagination and embrace the ability to take great images you are off to a good start.

A fashion photographer must be excellent in two photography disciplines. First, you need to be a great portrait photographer - second, you need to be able to create images for the advertisement market. You must be able to join the two if you are going to make it.

To be a successful fashion photographer you must also have a love of superior design clothes - without it you will never attain the heights that bring success. A fashion photographer must go up to date with all the latest fashion and have the skills to use his/her imagination to sell new designs.

Selling is the key - the fashion photographer must be able to sell his images to the fashion editor. Fashion photography is advertising and selling clothes.

To set up a reputation in fashion photography, the first thing you must do is set up a portfolio. Your portfolio should exhibit your best work and be your first selling point. The second, and equally as important as the first, is to set up an online portfolio - your own private Website.

To set up a portfolio you first must hire a model. Contacting your local modeling agencies can do this. You don't need to hire a famous model for your fashion portfolio - you need someone who will act well in front of the camera.

To be very successful you need to build a good relationship with models. Some models can be hard to work with so people psychology will play an important part. If you plan to shoot from your home studio supply a changing room for them.

If a model becomes unhappy for any reason, the photo session will be a waste of time. Let your model make his/her own suggestions - regardless of how trivial it may be, it will help to keep them relaxed and you may get results that may be useful.

Once your portfolio is created you need to get publicity for it. If you have previously published work - use them as a statement with the picture editors. You need to set up a good working relationship with all fashion editors that you'll be working with. So be professional.

Fashion photo editors are looking for brief images that clearly communicate an idea. You must, as a fashion photographer, have the aptitude to create unique settings. When you do gather a large amount of fashion images, submit them to a fashion agency: Women's magazines all over the world buy hundreds of stock shots every month. Photo agencies exist to sell photographers images - some of the larger fashion agencies have buyers all over the world. Some agencies can also re-sell your work in several different markets, and others will give you great career advice. Keep up to date with fashion magazines, study the market and always be on the lookout for varying fashion trends.

Don't be afraid to take the first step. If a fashion editor has no interest in your work - don't worry - try contacting different magazines or agencies - most great photographers have their work rejected some time during their career.

1) One of the newest trends of sunglasses this season is Ray-Ban's Wayfarers. This fashion of sunglasses was particularly popular in 1950's and 1960's. This year thay made a major came back. Such sunglasses come in classic black, vintage dazzling colors or new two - toned frame choices which create the decisive classic style.

2) The 70's style thicker frames have been admired for a few years already. However, you should be very cautious if you decide to choose these retro styles - enthused protections of sun. They should be suitable for your face features and not to look too big.

The Shorts...and Boots...!

Longer days and hot nights call for shorter hem lines- but that doesn't mean we have to deal in our boots for flip flops! The shorts are no longer assigned to weekend chores, beach cover-ups and music festivals- they have found their way to the real catwalks of Hollywood. With a little stimulation from Daisy Duke, these girls show how to breathe new life into a summer wardrobe staple.

Add a black to your outfit, and you are routinely labeled "edgy"- but to me, there is amazing about these girls that are friendly and sweet. Maybe it's because instead of opting for a heeled boot, they went with a loose decent flat boot...or maybe it's to do with the softer shapes of their tops- either way, I'm coveting this look...but I may have to go back over it on a really hot day.

For a simpler version of wearing boots with your shorts, keep the height of your boot to ankle length. The leg-lengthening class alone should have you stepping up out to experiment with this look! At 5'1, Nicole Richie looks as leggy as Gisele Bundchen in all her 5'10 of glory! I love how erratic the ankle boots look with the relaxed tops that these girls paired with their shorts. You almost expect a tattered flip flop- but instead you get a sexy treat….!

Are Fashion designers, the God of fashion world?

Fashion designers help make the billions of clothing articles, shoes, and accessories purchased every year by regulars. Fashion designers working for clothing wholesalers or manufacturers create designs for the mass market. Fashion designers are the people who create the stylish, whimsical, fun, silly, and often luxurious clothes we see parading down runways twice a year. Fashion designers design and create clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Some high-fashion designers are freelanced and design for individual clients. Other high-fashion designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores.

Fashion

Fashion design is the applied art committed to the design of clothing and lifestyle accessories created within the cultural and social influences of a specific time. Fashion designers have brought about a storm in this glamour world with their creditably fabulous variety. Fashion industry has always welcomed new talent giving rise to the budding stars of tomorrow. Only clothing created after 1858 could be considered as fashion design.

Throughout the early 20th century, practically all high fashion originated in Paris, and to a lesser extent London. At this time in fashion history the division between haute couture and ready-to-wear was not sharply defined.

Designers

Designers know they have this power, and will continue to use it to the power of global fashions throughout the eras. These designers create original outfits, as well as those that follow established fashion trends. Most fashion designers, however, work for attire manufacturers, creating designs of men's, women's, and children's fashions for the mass market. Designer brands which have a 'name' as their brand such as Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren are likely to be designed by a team of individual designers under the trend of a designer director. Thus, the tradition of designers sketching out garment designs instead of presenting completed clothing on models to customers began as an economy.

Fashionable Western styles were adopted all over the world, and many designers from outside of the West had a profound force on fashion. Currently, modern fashion has seen a suggestion to technology such as designers Hussein Chalayan and Miuccia Prada who have introduced industrial textiles and modern technology into their fall collections. Mass market designers generally adapt the trends set by the famous names in fashion. Increasingly, many modern high-end designers are now started to turn to mass market retailers to produce lower-priced products, and to broaden their customer base. Perhaps most importantly, designers use their imaginations to come up with new ideas.

There are a number of familiar fashion design schools worldwide. Most fashion design courses last for three years. As well as teaching students about the artistic and technical side of the subject, some courses include a year working in the fashion industry, to give students a taste of commercial fashion design. Others offer the chance to visit fashion houses abroad.

Are jeans fashionable?

The term 'fashion' refers to a foremost mode of expression. Although the term 'fashion' can apply to a extensive range of fields, from interior design and architecture to economics and technology, many people correlate fashion with clothing. What a certain culture understands by fashion is goodness and beauty. What goes by these criteria will therefore be fashionable. What doesn't fit in that particular mode of expression will be considered as unfashionable. When used, the word 'fashion' usually has a positive meaning and is commonly associated with the concepts of style and glamour. However, when referring to a person as being materialistic or trendy, the term 'fashion' has a negative connotation.

As far as clothes are concerned, how can we decide what is fashionable what is unfashionable? How do we decide what to wear? Do we go by the latest fashion trends and become fashion victims, or do we stick to what we know looks good on us? Tough choice! The idea of fashion in the 21st century refers mostly to high-heeled shoes, handbags, sports suits, designer jeans and ripped jeans.

Jeans are preferred by many people, as they are easy to suit, practical and comfortable. Although most of the jeans are made from denim, they may also come in a mixture of other fabrics. Jeans are most popular with teenagers, but they are now gaining popularity with other age categories as well. At their origin, the jeans were work clothes, but they began to be worn outside work places at the middle of the 20th century when they became admired among other social categories.

When most people think of jeans, they think of a casual way of dressing. The choice of color and style is a very wide one. Nowadays jeans come in so many styles that it is almost impossible not to find at least one pair of jeans that will suit you perfectly. But jeans don't vary on color alone. There are also various types of jeans according to the fits. The jeans fits can go from straight or loose to slim, baggy or skinny, from high-waisted to superlow-waisted.

One thing's for sure, jeans will never be unfashionable. A certain style will always be developed in order to keep up with the latest trends in fashion. So, if you want to be fashionable, but also comfortable, a pair of jeans is a safe choice.

Men’s military fashion trend in action

The men’s military fashion trend is not something right out of the rack. The flamboyant style has popularized right from the time it has been introduced starting from the 1980s to the time it was revived in 2008/09. But we can see that the 1980s fashion revival is losing the charm. This decade had called for a new swatch with a high end focus on subtly and quality. The military trend that would evolve in 2010 is expected to be more articulate. Latest fashion trends suggest that the military fashion has found a stalwart position in the wardrobes of all fashion chasers.

There are two key pieces that you need to consider if you wish to try on the military trend this fall. Number one, a greatcoat. The color combos that are strongly recommended are Army green and Navy / Air Force navy hues. You can pick single or double breasted suits but never forget to detail with brass buttons. To get the authentic look, grab some antique buttons or purchase a vintage piece and simply pull out a needle and thread. Make sure that the cut has been altered accordingly. You can leave the coat belted or unbelted. Number two is almost mandatory; aviator boots with shearling. But make sure you are just being on trend not like attending a fancy dress party.

Socks with shoes raising the style quotient

Go on with your gut feeling and wear ankle socks under your favorite pair of heels. Never give it a second thought as it no longer is a faux pas. The idea is sure to get your goose bumps if you are a fashion freak. There is no room to be skeptical about it as you can start looking at the bright side of it. Point one, socks are cheap. Point two, they take up considerably less space in your wardrobe and point three, they are wholly practical. Plus the latest fashion trends suggest that it is high time you experiment something daring.

If you are having long legs, then you are at the lucky end. Keep the socks bunched up at the ankles and it would make your legs looks shorten. It is of no surprise that it would look best on you and there would be a bonus if you have defined ankles. There are, of course options open to those not blesses with models’ legs. You can go for mid-calf versions, finer fabrics that don’t bunch too much and the like. Make yourself comfortable and try out very low sitting ankle socks that would just show a peep above your shoes.

Bring in the fashion trend and dare to look like female dandy with ankle or mid-calf socks. The chic side can also be downplayed with the socks gilding with the heels. They can even be paired with man-style flats like lace up oxfords. If you are concerned about the intensity of warmth that you would get, you can wear the socks on top of stockings which would give a layered look this season.

Fashion celebrities : Kristen Stewart vs Dakota Fanning

With Twilight mania hitting we thought we'd hit up a little bit of healthy fashion competition between some of the co-stars. We've already given you a fashion face-off between Ashley Greene and Kristen Stewart so today we decided it was the turn of Dakota Fanning to be leaning against the latter.

Kristen and Dakota are best friends off-stage and as well as Twilight both starred in The Runaways. And it seems being close friends has rubbed off on their style too, with both ladies opting for very parallel premier dresses. At last night's Twilight Eclipse premier both went for designer Elie Saab.

Kristen opted for a daring white backless number, while Dakota played it safer with a cute beige feathered piece. Both ladies also went for short frocks with sheer sleeve details at the The Runaways' premier at the Cinerama Dome Arclight Theaters in Hollywood.

However, Dakota opted, for what seems to be her brand puffball frock while Kristen went for a bodycon frock. It also seems Dakota likes to play it alot safer than Kristen opting for unbiased colours such as beige and silver, in flowing styles, while Kristen goes for bodycon styles by Herve Leger, backless numbers and bright colours.

However, off the red carpet it's a different story. While Dakota likes to experiment with the latest fashion trends such as girly pink shorts, skinny jeans and baggy tops, Kristen plays it alot safer. She's often snapped in her Converse trainers, casual skinny jeans and a grungy top and opts for negligible make-up.

As a result we're a little bit on the fence as to who should win our fashion face-off so we've decided to open up the floor to you. View the gallery of the two co-stars.

Velvet - a timeless classic

Hate it or love it, you just cannot ignore it. This applies for velvet truly. Even though many people just hate velvet and loathe its existence, it has been in the fashion trend since a long time. It is true that people may just shudder at the mere thought of post 9’s velvet revival as there were indeed some velvet disasters.

But the truth is that velvet does have some devoted followers since there have been times when velvet was capable of going so darn right. It just turned out to be that none can bear the grudge for long owing to the marvelous nature of the clothing. In 2010 fashion trend and specifically at the major fall 2010 fashion trends, velvet revival comes in many forms which just boost the oomph factor.

Velour which can be connected as a distant relative of velvet is commonly mistaken for the original most of the times. But the 2010 velvet trend clearly shows that there is no place for velour tracksuits. It has to be noted velveteen, which is also similar to velvet has a role to play. Body hugging rich velvet is on the ramp along with the floor length draping vibrant colors.

Latest classic fashion attires

People have a common tendency to confuse trend and fad with classic when they talk about fashion. While trend is a current style and fad is a practice followed for a period, by classic it means something which would be timeless. The latest fashion trends would not fall out the image of classic attires. The classic attires are usually treasured, copied and worn years after years.

Here are some latest fashion attires that had remained as timeless classics forever. The classic suit has always been a hit favorite be it a pantsuit or a skirt suit. Though detailing in the suit may change, but the trend would surely remain. Talk about jeans and it is hundred percent a classic item which has survived through centuries. People go gaga over a comfortable pair with a perfect fitting and cut. This season the trend is up for slim fit denims. High heels and evening gowns are yet other classic pieces. The charisma of classic attires is that it remains fad almost all seasons.

Spring/ summer trend of 2010

Its spring/ summer and it’s the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe. The harsh effects of global financial crisis have begun to fade and it is the best opportunity to set a course for how to dress this spring and summer.

Spring is the best time to hit the gym and which attire would more suit than hemlines that have crept up to shorter than short. Hot pants, boys shorts and tap pants are variations on this shorter than short style. Some trends have made a comeback like the knee high socks and the thigh high socks. A great pair of socks can surely add volumes to an outfit. Another fierce and interesting fashion trend is the military and the tribal trends in leather tunics, metal plating and war paint. If you want to pull off the ultimate appeal without going for micro-mini, the best choice would be long dress with a high split.

In 2010, the sportswear takes on a whole new level with football inspirations turn tomboy chic to sexy yet effortless looks. There is also the dance and 20s inspired tennis look attires in the sporty clothing. One-piece styles of clothing would always have a revival and now the trend is completely shifted to jumpsuits, playsuits and rompers.

Teen fashion trends

Teen fashion is pretty serious business. The trends are changeable, unstructured, anything but not constant. Teen age too is a precious time of life and the best time to look good. Studies expose that teenagers are more knowledgeable about any fashion accessory that other age-wise people.

Expectation from this sector is high and continuous. A designer catering to teenage fashion wear promises himself a life of insurrection and creative investigation. All teenagers are not rebels, they are just fashion conscious.

From cultural to fusion and trendy western casuals, teenage is all about joy in vivid colours. Teenagers are hard pressed for time as they are always speeding up from errands to coaching classes and regular schools. Thus they prefer something easy and relaxed. Their primary choice remains denims, jeans, washes in acid and stone. Corduroys fashions come and go. Teenagers go tremendously creative about accessories. Trinkets form bracelets, beads, clasp nose rings, cluster earrings, fake tattoos, nail painting, henna and bindis.

Carefree mind-set and the spirit of life is seen in mix and match wears, trendy jackets, stoles with tassels, bandanas, hair colour, faux fur trims on high boots and elbow pads in amazing hues. Shoes and belts are responsive to fashion demands and gadgets are trendy. Skirts go from long, to flares and short skirts from knee length to white mini skirts. Blouses come in tank tops and off shoulders for bold looks and classy colours in lilac and fuchsia in georgette or satin for a little conservative. The idea is to know the venue of your day and dress accordingly.

Racial wear for teenagers demands lot of invention. Lehengas and Ghagras come in various colours like emerald green, pool blue and be it gota, zari or embellishments in pearl, crystals or sequins, teenagers seem to need more! The demand is insatiable in fusion wear with embroidered suits for boys and jackets too. It is significant to notice the teenagers skin deep in tradition at any festival or celebration.

Though western trends such as japanese fashion seem to control teenagers in all walks of life, it is the effort of designers in balancing the ethnicity of Indian fashion. The next time you need the latest hair colour, be sure to ask a teenager!

Oxfam’s Celebrity pop up shop opens for one week only

Pop up shops, restaurants, art galleries etc have been ‘popping up’ all over London in a bid to lure customers into a unique, quirky and interesting new experience. Not only do they make use of redundant buildings, they can provide serious cash injection for those running the guises, if done correctly. Oxfam is the latest ‘brand’ to jump on the pop up bandwagon, with the opening of the Oxfam Curiosity Shop in London’s famous department store, Selfridges.

Okay, so it’s not your usual Oxfam shop. The staff will be made up of various A–list stars selling high-end and vintage fashion garments donated to the charity by celebrities. This is a one-week only event, starting today, so shoppers will need to get cracking if they want to get their hands on items previously belonging to Alexa Chung, Lady Gaga, Helen Mirren, to name a few.

TV presenter ZoĆ« Ball has raided her wardrobe for the cause. “Just like many women, I have often put off that much needed wardrobe clear out but I was inspired to dig out some of my old favourites for a good cause.”

Singer Annie Lenox, who is amongst the star studded work force said, “Women who are often trying to survive under conditions of chronic poverty motivated me to try to use my talents and resources to contribute to effective change.”

An online auction will be taking place (www.oxfam.org.uk), so people outside of London can also bag a bargain celebrity piece. The money raised will go to women’s projects around the world. Not a bad reason to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. Now where did I put my credit card?

Women more worried about their body image than men

The study published in the May issue of psychological journal Personality and Individual Differences, also showed that even healthy women or those without eating disorders have underlying concerns about their weight and react negatively whenever they see any overweight women.

The study by Brigham Young University showed when thin women were shown pictures of fat or overweight women and asked to imagine themselves like the image, their brain scans showed distress.

In recent times, being size zero is like a fashion statement especially for women. These women of all ages are flocking weight loss and slimming centers to attain their goal weight. This obsession with weight is medically termed as anorexia nervosa or simply, anorexia. This is a psychological disorder where the weight-obsessed women take their consciousness about weight to an extreme that may even lead to physical collapse.

Anorexia usually starts with the desire to look thin and have a super-trimmed body and under tremendous social pressure, this becomes an obsession.

Researchers Mark Allen, a BYU neuroscientist, grad student Tyler Owens and BYU psychology professor Diane Spangler came together on a long-term project to improve eating habits and to treat eating disorders by tracking progress with brain imaging technique. When anorexic and bulimic women view an overweight stranger, the brain’s self-reflection center, known as the medial prefrontal cortex, lights up in ways that suggest extreme unhappiness and in some cases, self-loathing. This clearly increases the pressure to become thin and leave the woman stressed.

The motivation for the study was to put forward a point of reference among a control group of women who scored better on eating disorder diagnostic tests. Women in this group were found to have “sub-clinical issues with body image.

When the same experiments were conducted over men to compare, the women’s brain activity was found much closer to full-blown eating disorders.

According to Spangler, women are bombarded with messages that perpetuate the thin ideal, and the barrage changes how they view themselves.

For many women, bodily appearance and being thin is important and their brain reflects to that idea. This increases the risk of eating and mood disorders.
